Greg Schiano Believes In The Process, Not Results, After Another Embarrassing Loss

Greg Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020 to stabilize a program that went through many down years and found itself near the bottom of, not just the Big Ten, but the nation as a whole.

As we sit here in year seven of Schiano’s second tenure, Rutgers still sits as one of the worst teams in the nation.

But don’t worry, Rutgers fans, Schiano and his staff continue to do things the right way despite results because that is something you cannot worry about.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Schiano said following loss vs. Boston College. “You coach your guts out and you let the chips fall where they may. When you start worrying about results is when you get in trouble. The score takes care of itself if you can keep working and keep focused on what is really important.”

If wins are not what’s really important, what are we focusing on? Clearly something is not right with this process Schiano and his staff are going through.

Let’s face it — Schiano has been a glorified car salesman since he returned. This year, he tried to sell the fan base that the defense was going to be better and that Travis Johansen was the right hire even though he publicly said that there was another hire in place for the job before falling through late.

Schiano tried to sell the quarterback position, which has seven interceptions through two games this year. And he is still doing so.

“I believe we can win with these quarterbacks,” Schiano said. “I think we have to improve. I’ve seen them do it at a high level.”

Well, Dylan Lonergan started for one year in his career and it was last fall when he led a 2-10 Boston College team. AJ Surace made his first start last night and it was a complete disaster. So, where is this high level of quarterback play?

It remains unknown where Rutgers will go with the quarterback position moving forward but if healthy, Lonergan should get another chance. It is clear that Surace was in over his head on Friday night. He could not see defenders in the middle of the field and it led to the game-clinching interception for B.C. There is no need to rewatch tape on that. We all saw it live.

“It’s too soon after the game to be able to tell you the answer on that,” Schiano said of the quarterback situation moving forward. “First off, we got to figure out where we are health wise and then we have to see this tape and really watch and see the reasons why.”

It’s year seven. Rutgers is now 0-2 against teams that went a combined 2-22 last season. If not now, then when?

“We’re just not quite ready yet but the key word is yet,” Schiano said. “This team will continue to improve, and we’ll beat some people that I think you don’t think we can beat.”
