Grant Hill explains why he passed on Jaylen Brown over other Boston Celtics for Olympics

· · 1 min read

While it might not impact the Boston Celtics as much with the aggrieved party now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, US Men’s National Team head Grant Hill recently explained why he passed over star Boston forward Jaylen Brown for the 2024 Olympics. Speaking on an episode of the “Road Trippin'” podcast (h/t Boston Dot Com’s Khari A. Thompson), the Duke alum explained why Derrick White and Jrue Holiday were the only Boston players on that team besides Jayson Tatum.

“Contrary to popular belief, I do like Jaylen Brown,” said Hill. “I love his game and things got difficult there with that team. So, in putting the team together, just to put some context, we had Kawhi Leonard penciled in on that team and he got hurt at the end of that season in 2024.”

“He came to camp, he wasn’t right, and so we had to pivot,” suggested the Team USA head honcho, continuing to push back against narratives that he has a bone to pick with Brown.

“Jrue Holiday was so important for us in that FIBA game,” said Hill. “A point guard who can play his role, ball pressure, the whole nine.”

“So, if Jrue got hurt, our point guards were (Tyrese) Haliburton and (Stephen) Curry, and defense wasn’t necessarily their strong point. So, it was like ‘let’s bring in insurance for Jrue Holiday’ and it was like Derrick White. So, that was the thought process.”
