Godzilla Officially Returns Just 4 Months After Minus Zero
Toho’s iconic Japanese kaiju is back with Godzilla Minus Zero, and audiences only have to wait four months to see him again. Rather than Godzilla Minus Zero‘s ending acting as a prolonged goodbye to the King of the Monsters, his enduring popularity means there are always new efforts in the works to give audiences fresh stories with the giant creature at the center.
It is too early to tell if that will include a third entry in Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus franchise. Minus Zero is poised to be another tremendous success, earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. It’s also positioned to do very well at the box office, which will only bolster Toho’s efforts to keep giving fans more of Gojira in some fashion without having to wait too long.
Toho has already confirmed plans for additional Godzilla-centric films, such as Shin Godzilla 2, but it is unconfirmed when audiences will get to see them. The exception to this is a highly anticipated blockbuster coming out in just four months that will once again pit Godzilla against some of the world’s greatest kaiju.
That is because Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have Godzilla’s return dated for March 26, 2027, which is when Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide. The proximity to Godzilla Minus Zero is partially tied to how Toho wants the King of the Monsters to be used, even though this next appearance will be drastically different from how Godzilla is in Yamazaki’s sequel.
Everything We Know About Godzilla X Kong: Supernova

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is the sixth film in Legendary and WB’s Monsterverse movie franchise that began in 2014. The franchise originally told standalone stories for Godzilla and Kong before having them fight each other in 2021, before becoming allies in 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.
Supernova is an extension of the larger story Godzilla has had within the franchise. After helping Kong take down Skar King, Godzilla will need the giant monkey’s help to defeat a new threat, believed to be cosmic in nature given the Supernova subtitle. The most common theory is that Godzilla and Kong will have to combine their skills to fight SpaceGodzilla, who was previously linked to the sequel through its writing credits.
The 2027 blockbuster is directed by Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) based on a script by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). The human cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, and the late Sam Neill in new Monsterverse roles, while Dan Stevens returns as Trapper from The New Empire.
Filming on Godzilla X Kong: Supernova ran from April 2025 through at least October 2025. The film has already had a full year in post-production to fine-tune the edit and work on the massive amount of VFX shots. One might think that the film could have come out earlier in 2026, but that was not possible.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Wasn’t Allowed To Release The Same Year As Godzilla Minus Zero

Given how precious Godzilla is to Toho, the studio is very careful not to oversaturate the market with him. The last thing they want is for audiences to grow tired of seeing the kaiju or for his arrival to become less special. That is why Toho reportedly has a non-compete clause in its deal with Legendary.
The deal prevents multiple Godzilla movies from being released within the same year. This blocks Legendary from putting one of its Monsterverse films out in theaters within any calendar year that Toho wants to release one of its films. So, even if Legendary could have had Supernova ready for a release sometime in 2026, that was never going to happen.
The logic behind Toho not wanting competing Godzilla movies in theaters close together makes sense. However, it is a bit silly when Legendary can still have a short four-month gap, as they do with Supernova. Just because one is a 2026 film and the other is coming in 2027 doesn’t make their debuts feel any further apart.
The good news is that short gaps like this haven’t prevented multiple Godzilla movies from finding success before. Godzilla Minus One and The New Empire came out less than four months apart, but both were still huge hits. The former broke box office records for Toho’s Japanese productions and won an Oscar, while the latter became the Monsterverse’s highest-grossing film.
A similar result will hopefully come with Supernova. Audiences should still be riding the high of Minus Zero, and that could help drive additional interest to Godzilla’s next film, even if they couldn’t be more different.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Will Be Very Different From Godzilla Minus Zero

The reality is that the Monsterverse is tackling Godzilla in a completely different way than Yamazaki’s films. The Japanese director has made the kaiju a terrifying presence, a haunting representation of the lasting impact of WWII, and part of a smaller, more dramatic story that really takes time to explore its human characters. That’s hardly an accurate description of the Monsterverse’s version.
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is going to be another massive action blockbuster. It will swing for the fences in terms of the scale of its story and push the boundaries of where it can take Godzilla’s powers. The movie is meant to be fun above all else and one audiences will want to see again and again on the big screen.
The Monsterverse also has moved Godzilla away from being a real danger to humanity. He’s become a protector for the planet, emerging whenever a new threat comes and going back into hiding once his job is done. This is true even though the Monsterverse’s Godzilla is bigger and stronger than the dread-inducing version Yamazaki has used.
Essentially, everything about Godzilla X Kong: Supernova will be different. The budget, the scale, the look, the tone, the action, the characters, the world, and more will be almost unrecognizable compared to Godzilla Minus Zero. That doesn’t make the Monsterverse’s depiction bad. It just goes to show how many options Toho has to keep entertaining audiences with the King of the Monsters.
