Giants Put Together 10th-Inning Rally, Edge Cubs 2-1

While there was not a lot of offense put together between the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs on Sunday night, the Giants made their two runs count in beating the Cubs 2-1.

The game, which was shown on Peacock as part of the “Sunday Night Baseball” package of telecasts, ended up having a lot of pitchers from both teams.

As for Giants starter Trevor McDonald, he worked five innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, walked three, and struck out six.

Cubs starter Jameson Tallion only worked one inning against the Giants before coming out of the game. Tallion allowed two hits, one earned run, walked two, and struck out two.

Giants, Cubs Turn to Bullpens

Once those pitchers were gone, Giants manager Tony Vitello and Cubs manager Craig Counsell made a few calls to their respective bullpens

In the first inning, Rafael Devers walked and Luis Arraez singled. With two outs, Jung Hoo Lee singled to center field. Devers scored and San Francisco went up 1-0.

Then, in the bottom of the third inning, Carson Kelly and Pete Crow-Armstrong singled for Chicago. Moises Ballesteros hit a two-out single to center field, bringing home Kelly and the game was tied at 1-1. 

For the Cubs, that was all the offense as far as runs go that they would get across home plate. 

Fans at Wrigley Field had to sit through six scoreless innings before getting to the top of the 10th inning. It should be said that the Cubs did have scoring opportunities, but they could not get a big hit. Because that happened, it led the game enter into the designated runner situation.

Giants Find 10th-Inning Magic

In the 10th inning, Bryce Eldridge was the Giants’ designated runner. Jonah Cox, though, came into the game as a pinch runner for Eldridge. Matt Chapman singled to center field and Cox scored, putting San Francisco up 2-1.

Keaton Winn worked the ninth inning and ended up getting the win, going to 2-1. Dylan Smith worked the 10th inning and got his first save. Chicago’s Trent Thorton gave up the game-winning run and absorbed the loss, going to 2-2 this season.

The Giants go to 12 games below .500 at 27-39 as they try to get on track under Vitello, their first-year manager. Chicago falls to 34-32.

San Francisco gets a day off on Monday before opening a three-game series against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
