· · 2 min read

The last time Georgetown football missed the UIL playoffs, the first Apple Watch had just debuted and NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes was still an underclassman at Texas Tech.

And thanks to running back Zechariah Guyton, the Eagles will continue their streak.

Georgetown  (6-4, 5-3) rode three touchdowns from Guyton to a 28-14 win over Killeen that cemented the Eagles’ place in the postseason Friday at Birkelbach Field. With three wins in their final four games of the regular season, the Eagles rose to third place in District 12-5A Division I and qualified for the playoffs for the 12th consecutive year.

Guyton recorded Georgetown’s first points of the night with a 1-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 13 seconds left in the first quarter. The power back also muscled his way into the end zone for the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0. Those were the only points until the Kangaroos (5-5, 4-4) cut the deficit to one point on a 39-yard passing touchdown with 6:46 left in the third quarter. Georgetown tacked on a safety and a 26-yard field goal from Dan Lopez to extend the lead to 13-7 before the third period ended.

Georgetown added two more touchdowns from Guyton in the fourth, while Killeen also found the end zone again.

The Eagles were on the outside looking in for the postseason just two weeks ago. But an Oct. 23 win at A&M Consolidated buoyed Georgetown into the top four of the district standings and Friday’s win, coupled with Consol’s loss to Hendrickson, pushed Georgetown up to third.

Next for the Eagles is a bi-district matchup with Angleton (9-1), which has averaged 47.6 points this season while barely allowing more than 10 per game.
