Genesio not expecting new signings at Marseille despite needing reinforcements

Marseille boss Bruno Genesio revealed he does not expect the club to sign any more players in this window, despite admitting they “could use some reinforcements”.

Marseille began their Ligue 1 campaign with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg, but lost 2-0 against Monaco on Sunday.

Paris Brunner scored either side of half-time to send Monaco top of the league; Monaco are the only team to have won their opening two Ligue 1 matches this season. It is the first time only one side have achieved this feat in the competition since Grenoble in 2008-09.

Marseille, meanwhile, have lost six of their last eight away Ligue 1 matches (W2). In 2026, no top-flight team have lost more away games than Marseille (six – level with Angers and Nice).

Marseille have also lost 11 of their 15 visits to Monaco across all competitions since 2013-14, more than any other side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mason Greenwood, Facundo Medina and Geronimo Rulli have all left the club this summer, while Timothy Weah, who spent the latter half of 2025-26 on loan at Marseille, has been the only signing.

And Genesio is not hopeful of any more arrivals ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline, insisting he must adapt to the squad he has.

“There won’t be any new signings,” said Genesio.

“We would certainly need three or four departures to perhaps have one or two new players. So, by Tuesday, it seems complicated to me.

“I think we could use some reinforcements. But when you can’t, you can’t. There’s no point in going around in circles and speculating.

“If I’m told it’s not possible, I have to adapt. It will be up to us to optimize the squad to the fullest.”
