Gasperini urges Roma to move faster in transfer market

Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has urged the club to move faster in the summer transfer window, with the start of the 2026-27 season approaching.

After almost a decade in charge of Atalanta, Gasperini made the switch to Roma in June last year and made an immediate impact in the Italian capital.

Roma qualified for the Champions League for the first time since the 2017–18 season, when Eusebio Di Francesco was at the helm, and for the first time since then (77), the Giallorossi also surpassed 70 total points in a Serie A season (73).

Gasperini won 23 of his 38 league games last season with Roma (D4 L11) as they finished third in Serie A, ending the campaign with five consecutive wins.

However, they have made just two signings so far this summer, acquiring Daniele Ghilardi from Verona and making Donyell Malen’s loan move from Aston Villa permanent.

Roma also saw Zeki Celik complete a shock move to rivals Juventus following the expiry of his contract.

While Gasperini was unfazed about the defender’s exit, he still believes Roma must move quicker in the market.

“Celik was out of contract, [but] in general we have to be better, because the market moves quickly,” said Gasperini.

“This is a slightly unusual year, with the World Cup in the middle and D’Amico only arriving in June, but now we’re starting to move.

“I thank Celik for what he did last season, but I’m convinced we’ll strengthen and be even better.”

Gasperini also revealed Roma walked away from negotiations with Crysencio Summerville and Mason Greenwood, with the latter joining Fenerbahce.

The 68-year-old says it would be unfair to offer new players higher wages than those who secured Champions League football last season.

“Are they profiles suited to Roma’s resources? Evidently not, but by choice, not because of the club’s means,” Gasperini said of Summerville and Greenwood.

“It’s been decided to set a wage ceiling, and it seems right to me: it’s not nice for someone who reached the Champions League to immediately be leapfrogged by a new arrival.”

Roma have made some positive moves this summer, with Paulo Dybala, Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini all extending their contracts with the club.
