Fraser urges Toronto forward Vilsaint to ‘put away some chances’

Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser has urged forward Jules-Antony Vilsaint to start scoring as they prepare to take on D.C. United.

Toronto’s poor form in MLS continued during the week as they were held to a 0-0 draw by the New England Revolution on Wednesday.

Each of Toronto’s last two regular-season matches have ended in goalless draws, the second time in club history that the Reds have had consecutive 0–0 draws (also in 2010).

Vilsaint recorded a team-high four shots against New England, while he also accounted for 0.9 of his side’s 1.41 expected goals (xG).

The 23-year-old squandered the best chance of the game when his attempted back-heel deflected off his own foot and away, though Fraser believes the forward can start scoring soon.

“Jules has been training well over the break and he’s earned a few opportunities and put himself in good positions, but I think he would agree as well that he needs to put away some of these chances,” said Fraser.

“He’s improving leaps and bounds, and that’s why he’s got the opportunities he has.”

Goalkeeper Luka Gavran, who made three saves against the Revolution, believes Toronto must win against D.C. United.

“Going to D.C. Saturday, it’s pretty much a must-win, I think we all know that,” said Gavran.

“Maybe [against the Revs] instead of getting one point, I think we might have missed out on two extra points.

“We probably want a few of those back, but from a mentality standpoint, it was great and we’ve got to move forward.”

D.C. United are ninth in the Eastern Conference, three places and points above Toronto, but they are also struggling in MLS.

They returned to league action with a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo, marking their fifth consecutive match without a win.

Baribo scored his ninth MLS goal of the season on Wednesday, the most of any D.C. player in 2026, and has matched the total of their leading scorer from 2025 (Christian Benteke).

Baribo’s nine goals have come from just 12 shots on target, the fewest by any MLS player with nine or more league goals this season.

Although Toronto failed to score in their last match against New England, Coello more than played his role in search of a goal.

He created a match-high five chances while also leading the Reds for touches (57), successful passes (32) and possession regains (nine).

MATCH PREDICTION – D.C. UNITED WIN

D.C. United are unbeaten in nine straight home matches against Toronto (W3 D6), though the last two meetings at Audi Field have been drawn.

Toronto’s last win at D.C. was a 1–0 victory in April 2016, the Reds’ only clean sheet in 21 all-time away matches in this fixture.

D.C. scored from their only shot on target in their 1–1 draw at Houston; they are unbeaten when having one or zero shots on target in an MLS match this season (W1 D3) after losing 15 of 17 such matches over the previous five seasons combined (D2).

Toronto’s winless run extended to 10 matches in regular-season play with their draw at New England.

This is Toronto’s fourth different winless run of 10 or more matches since the start of the 2023 season, equalling the total of double-digit winless streaks in league play in the club’s first 16 MLS seasons.
