Former Vols, Maryville head coaches manage Giants-Brewers game

The series opener of a four-game series featured two MLB managers who served as college baseball head coaches in Tennessee. Pat Murphy is in his third season as the Brewers‘ manager and Tony Vitello is in his first season as San Francisco’s manager.

Murphy served as Maryville College’s head coach in 1983, while Vitello led the Vols to a national championship in his eight seasons from 2018-25 as Tennessee’s head coach.

Former Vol Drew Gilbert played for Vitello from 2020-22 and served as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning for the Giants on Monday at Milwaukee. He went 0-for-2.

Murphy was also a head coach in college at Notre Dame (1988-94) and Arizona State (1995–2009).

He compiled a 318-116-1 record and advanced to four NCAA Tournament regionals with the Fighting Irish. At Arizona State, he guided the Sun Devils to a 629–284–1 record, four Pac-10 championships (2000, 2007-09) and became the youngest college head coach to reach 500 victories. Arizona State advanced to the College World Series four times under Murphy, including a runner-up finish in 1998.

Vitello guided Tennessee to a 341–131 record, one national championship, two SEC Tournament titles, two SEC regular-season championships and three College World Series appearances.

Game 2 between the Brewers and Giants is slated for 7:40 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. Game 3 will take place at 7:40 p.m. EDT on Wednesday and a series finale is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. EDT on Thursday.
