Former Ohio State hockey goalie signed to 3-year contract extension

· · 2 min read

To say that former Ohio State goalie Jakub Dobes was a revelation for the Montreal Candiens would be a bit of an understatement. All he did was get hot at the end of the year and help lead the team that drafted him out of college last season to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Statistically speaking, Dobes was the top rookie goalie in the NHL last year. He had a 2.78 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage, winning 29 of his 42 regular-season appearances. However, it was the postseason in which he really shined, making unbelievable saves and standing tall in the crease in seven-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres.

It was unexpected in a lot of ways, as Montreal made a change halfway through the season, going with Dobes, who more than took advantage of the situation. It now appears as though the team is committed to Dobes over what everyone thought would be the team’s No. 1 goalie, Samuel Montembeault. The contract is reported to include an average annual salary of $5,357,575.

Les Canadiens s’entendent sur les termes d’une prolongation de contrat de trois saisons (2027-2028 à 2029-2030) avec le gardien Jakub Dobes.

The deal doesn’t put the netminder among the top-paid goalies in the League, but it’s a commitment that will allow him to continue to make a mark and get paid more in the future.
