The Arizona Cardinals have released former FSU running back Trey Benson, announcing the news on Monday. Benson battled several injuries during his two seasons with the Cardinals after they took him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Benson played in 13 games as a rookie in 2024, but missed Weeks 16 and 17 after being played in the injured reserve with an ankle injury. He ended the year with 291 rushing yards and one touchdown on 63 carries.

He became Arizona’s top running back in the 2025 season after James Conner suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3, but Benson suffered a season-ending injury of his own in Week 4. He played in 17 games and made two starts during his two seasons with the Cardinals, rushing for 451 yards and one touchdown, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

Benson entered the 2026 training camp battling for a roster spot after the Cardinals brought back Connors, signed Tyler Allgeier as a free agent and drafted Jeremiyah Love with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Benson, he missed time repeatedly as he continues to recover from last year’s season-ending knee injury.
