Former Chargers cornerback breaks silence on trade to Seahawks

The Chargers have made a flurry of moves since trimming the roster from 90 to 53 players.

One of those moves included trading away undrafted cornerback Avery Smith.

Smith was sent to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. In exchange, the Chargers received a 2027 sixth-round pick. The 22-year-old spoke to reporters on Thursday about the trade and admitted he was surprised by the trade for one particular reason.

“I follow football, and I haven’t really heard of an undrafted free agent getting traded before the regular season,” Smith said. 

“So that is what surprised me.”

Smith signed with the Chargers in the spring as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo. He had a strong showing in camp; however, there was simply no room for the undrafted rookie in a packed cornerback room.

Cornerbacks like Donte Jackson, Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still had the leg up on Smith.

Prior to joining the Chargers, Smith was a standout at Toledo. He recorded 127 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss,26 passes defended, three interceptions and one forced fumble.

Smith did good work with the Chargers, and now he will look to make a name for himself in Seattle. He’s among five cornerbacks that the Seahawks have on the 53-man roster.

According to Ourlads, Smith is second on the depth chart at the nickleback position.
