Former Celtic star letting heart rule his head by dismissing Argentina

Big Chris Sutton is usually spot on, but he’s let his heart rule his head this time by dismissing current World Champions Argentina…

Chris Sutton was a Celtic icon as a player, due to being a thorn in the side of opponents and supporters alike, and he continues to ruffle feathers of the same folk as a respected pundit.

Chris is usually bang on the money with his assessments of the game, but has somewhat jumped the gun with his latest post on social media outlet X.

In the wake of England’s extremely fortunate win over Norway, and Argentina’s scrappy win over Switzerland, which set up a clash for a place in the final between the two adversaries, Chris posted this to his 300,000 plus followers…

“England getting Argentina over Switzerland is like winning a watch. The World Cup final beckons. Argentina are average… Switzerland would have been a much tougher test…”

There’s of course nothing wrong with Chris’ opinion, as he’s a proud Englishman who naturally wants to see his nation lift the biggest prize on offer in international football, but I reckon that he’s wide of the mark on this occasion, and is guilty of letting his heart rule his head.

England has some truly gifted players, that’s not in question, but they have shown in this World Cup that they aren’t exactly what you would call a ‘world class side’ and are lagging behind the likes of France and Spain when it comes to overall collective cohesion and quality.

You can bet your life that Chris, and the overwhelming majority of England supporters were wishing for Switzerland to cause an upset and be all that stands behind England and the chance to earn their sixty years of hurt.

Whilst not firing on all cylinders, Argentina are not an ‘average’ side as Chris claims, and one can only assume with it being early on a Sunday morning, he was still feeling the effects of several refreshments the night and early morning before!!

The Argentine’s are reigning World Champions after all, and have the great Lionel Messi in their side, so they are far from the average side that Chris claims. Their team is packed with players who have been over this course and distance and know how to get it over the line by any means necessary.

The South Americans might not have faced a so called ‘bigger nation’ but neither have England.

Chris is rarely so wrong, but certainly is on this rare occasion. Argentina are World Champions and merit the respect that this title affords. If England did win it we’d all never hear the end of it for the next sixty years, so why can’t Chris Sutton afford that same respect to Argentina that they’d demand if England become World Champions later this month?

Switzerland might be a half decent side but they’ve won nothing and getting to the quarterfinals represents a successful campaign for them. For Argentina, getting to the semi-final is expected and they will have their eyes on getting past England and retaining the trophy.

In terms of football played so far France has to be favourites, followed by Spain and Argentina. England has been reliant on Jude Bellingham to get this far and performances will need to improve of they are to beat two of those three rivals.

But if Sutton and the rest of England wants to think getting past Argentina is a given, that’s fine with me. We’ve seen this movie before have we not?

Let’s hope Big Sutton has egg on his face come Thursday morning!
