Former Browns RB Nick Chubb retires; Career stats include joining history

Every Cleveland Browns fan can remember where they were when the Houston Texans announced that they had signed running back Nick Chubb. It was a sad day in Northeast Ohio.

On Friday, Chubb announced his retirement from the NFL on an Instagram post. Chubb began the 2025 season as Houston’s lead running back, but his snaps became more limited as the season rolled along, and eventually fourth-round rookie Woody Marks surpassed him. Chubb concluded the season with just nine starts and 326 offensive snaps, or 32% of all offensive plays.

Chubb follows the past greatness of exceptional running backs associated with the Browns such as Jim Brown, Kevin Mack, Marion Motley, Greg Pruitt, Leroy Kelly, Ernie Green, Earnest Byner, Dub Jones, and Bobby Mitchell.

Chubb was a second-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft and pick out of Georgia. He started just nine games in his rookie season and then was the starting RB beginning in 2019. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards in four seasons, including the 1,525 he gained in 2022. Chubb has been named to the Pro Bowl four times and voted Second Team All-Pro in 2022.

He suffered two gruesome knee injuries in his career, one with Georgia in 2015 and the other against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the early stages of the 2013 season. He had a broken foot in the Week 15 game against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024.

Chubb spent seven seasons with Cleveland before playing with Houston last year.

His career totals are 100 games played with 87 starts, 1,462 attempts for 7,349 rushing yards, 340 first-down conversions, 54 rushing touchdowns, plus 141 receptions for 1,109 receiving yards and five additional scores. 

Impressively, Chubb was productive with his carries in a way that is unique among NFL running backs all time:

The Texans failed to re-sign Chubb to another one-year deal, and he became an unrestricted free agent. There was loose talk about a Cleveland return for 2026, but that never happened either.

While with Cleveland, the home stands were littered with (Myles Garrett) and (Chubb) jerseys worn by Browns fans. Still are, still will be.
