Former Australia batter David Warner fined for drink driving

The former Australia cricket batter David Warner has been fined and ordered to have an interlock device fitted to his car after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Warner has been fined A$1,500 (£1,109) after recording a blood alcohol reading of more than twice the legal limit in a random breath test while driving his family home from a social function in April.

Waverley Local Court heard the 39-year-old stopped his car when he saw the roadside breath-testing site and attempted to swap ⁠seats with a female passenger in an incident that occurred on Easter weekend.

“I accept Mr Warner is unlikely to re-offend,” Judge Clare Farnan told the court, adding that the offence was aggravated as there were children in the car at the time. “[But] regrettably, drink-driving is still ⁠a significant factor in many crashes in New South Wales.” The interlock ‌device in his car which will prevent it ‌from starting if it detects alcohol in his system.

Warner concluded his international playing career in 2024 after featuring in 112 Tests, 161 one-day internationals and 110 T20Is for Australia.

He continues to captain the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash, while has also moved into the media, operating as part of Fox Sports’ commentary team during Australia’s shock defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin.
