Forlan open to Suarez reunion with Uruguay

Diego Forlan has hinted at a possible return to the Uruguay national team for Luis Suarez.

Suarez has not represented Uruguay since the 2024 Copa America, when he helped his country finish third in the competition.

The 39-year-old is Uruguay’s all-time top scorer, with his 69 goals better than Edinson Cavani’s 58 and Forlan’s 36.

Suarez and Forlan lined up together at the 2010 World Cup, with Uruguay finishing fourth at the tournament, before winning the 2011 Copa America together.

Forlan won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup after scoring five times at the competition (joint-most), while he featured off the bench in 2014 when Cavani led the line alongside Suarez.

Forlan is now Uruguay’s interim boss following a dismal World Cup campaign under Marcelo Bielsa this summer, and the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker is open to welcoming Suarez back to the squad.

“I have enormous respect for Luis and a lot of trust in him,” said Forlan.

“If he is up for selection, to be able to have a player like him, who scores goals, has experience and shows it week in, week out, why not [pick him]?

“We will see later, nobody will discuss what Luis is.”

Forlan’s first game in charge will come against Japan on September 24, while Uruguay will also face South Korea in the September-October international break.

Suarez, who has scored 10 goals in 14 MLS games this year, previously revealed he is willing to return to the squad for the upcoming matches.
