Florida AD sounds off on Sorsby ruling as threat to game integrity

Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin described his reaction to the court ruling on Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby this week, telling ESPN he was “stunned.”

Sorsby had been ruled ineligible by the NCAA after admitting to gambling on college football games, including ones he took part in while on the roster at Indiana. Later, a Texas judge overturned that decision, allowing Sorsby to remain qualified to play while serving a limited suspension.

Stricklin, frustrated with the outcome, compared the Sorsby situation to the historic Black Sox scandal and Pete Rose. Beyond the Florida AD, this ruling has created massive online discourse, fueled by widespread criticism from other college football officials and university athletic directors.

“The NCAA strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling in Sorsby’s case and is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome — which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports,” Stricklin said. “The NCAA is committed to supporting student-athlete mental health but must continue to aggressively defend against actions that defraud college athletics and threaten competitive integrity, such as betting on one’s own sport.”

He went on to say, “As someone who grew up reading about the ‘Black Sox Scandal,’ and seeing what happened to Pete Rose and just understanding how bright that line seemed to be in all of American sports, I’m stunned that there would be a question at the court level that this is acceptable.

“That’s not a judgment on the young man. It’s just that was a pretty fundamental tenet of American sports, that if you’re going to participate, you can’t gamble, especially on your own team,” Stricklin concluded.

Some administrators suggest the conclusion further demonstrates how challenging the current collegiate landscape has become — many believe the NCAA lacks the ability to enforce guidelines necessary to preserve the ethics of college sports.
