The senatorial candidate of Imo West of the Action Peoples Party in the coming 2027 election, Rufus Omeire, has explained why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should declare a state of emergency on gully erosion in the South-East region.

He made this known in a statement on Friday.

Omeire raised an alarm that the erosion has destroyed communities, roads, homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure in the southeast region.

According to him, erosion posed a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and sustainable development in the Southeast region, demanding urgent federal government intervention.

“I urge President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on gully erosion in the South-East, particularly in the Orlu Senatorial Zone and Ideato Federal Constituency. The devastating erosion ravaging our communities continues to destroy roads, homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure, posing a serious threat to lives, livelihoods, and sustainable development. Urgent federal intervention is necessary to address this environmental disaster,” Omeire, a former Nigerian lawmaker, stated.

His demand comes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently approved the construction of the 150-kilometer Oba–Nnewi–Uga–Akokwa–Arondizuogu–Okigwe Road after many years of neglect.

DAILY POST reports that Ikenga Ugochinyere, member of the House of Representatives representing the Ideato Federal Constituency, had on Thursday reacted to Tinubu’s administration’s approval to commence the Oba-Nnewi to Okigwe road construction.
