Flick in press conference: Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal and his possible absence

These were the German coach’s words: “Lamine Yamal took a knock and was in pain. It was better for him to train separately. After training he said everything was fine. He will travel with us and tomorrow we’ll see.”

Gabriel Jesus

The coach also spoke about whether Gabriel Jesus will be available: “He’s still not at 100%, but I see him enjoying himself with the ball. He can play a few minutes.”

Does he have a better squad than last year?

“I can see how well we press, the work we’re doing, the rondos, the possession drills. We’ll see at the end of the season whether this squad is better than last year’s, but in terms of quality it’s top.”

The chosen captains

“With Ter Stegen and Araujo not being available, it’s normal that they voted for him. I chose two because of their importance in the dressing room. I’m happy with the team’s choice and with the five overall. We’ll need players who can speak up and take responsibility.”

Jules Koundé

“What I can say about him is that he is an incredible professional. He gives everything. He is competitive. I spoke with him about the option of playing at centre-back, which he prefers. We want to help him reach his best level. There are fantastic options in every position, and we decide what is best for the team in each match. The decisions can change. But he works hard and wants to reach his best level.”
