Five Packers won’t start training camp; Micah Parsons to join PUP list

· · 2 min read

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers placed five players on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list July 27 and are expected to place one more notable player absent from the list on July 28.

Guard Aaron Banks, cornerback Kamal Hadden, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, tight end Tucker Kraft and tight end Luke Musgrave were the first additions to the list.

Defensive end Micah Parsons was not on the list, but he is expected to be added once he is processed and formally classified after his entrance physical.

The Packers‘ first training camp practice is July 29 and every player must undergo a physical exam before rejoining the team.

For players like Hadden (foot/ankle) and Kraft (knee), their placement on PUP was not a surprise. Both suffered season-ending injuries last season and weren’t expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Banks, who was bothered by a groin pull much of last season, didn’t participate in offseason workouts but said he was not anticipating any problems returning. It’s possible he has another injury that the Packers want to heal before they clear him from practice.

Hargrave would have had to suffer an injury during offseason workouts or else he would be listed on the non-football injury list.

Parsons will remain on PUP the entire summer and probably into the start of the regular season as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered in Week 15.

Additionally, running back Chris Brooks was placed on the non-football injury list.

All of the PUP players can be activated at any time for training camp. They are allowed to continue their rehabs while on PUP, but they can’t take part in practice.

Since they are on reserve/PUP, they count against the 90-man roster.

If a player remains on PUP throughout training camp, the club has the option to start him on PUP when the regular season starts. But if he does start there, he must miss a minimum of four games.

Players on PUP after the regular seasons starts don’t count against the 53-man roster.
