First College Football Playoff Rankings Revealed as Playoff Picture Begins to Take Shape
The wait is finally over. The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season have officially been revealed, giving college football fans their first look at how the selection committee views the nation’s top teams heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
With the expanded 12 team playoff approaching, every ranking matters as programs battle for a chance to compete for a national championship. Tuesday night’s reveal brought plenty of excitement, surprises and questions about which teams have the strongest paths to the postseason.
At the top of the rankings, Miami claimed the No. 1 spot with an undefeated 8-0 record. Georgia followed at No. 2, while Utah landed at No. 3. Indiana and Alabama rounded out the top five.
There were also some interesting placements throughout the top 10. Kentucky earned the No. 6 spot, followed by Texas at No. 7, UCLA at No. 8, BYU at No. 9 and Ole Miss at No. 10.
The SEC Makes Its Presence Known
One of the biggest storylines from the first rankings was the SEC’s presence throughout the top 25.
Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Texas and Ole Miss all landed inside the top 10. Tennessee came in at No. 13, LSU at No. 14, Missouri at No. 18, South Carolina at No. 21 and Florida at No. 24.
That gives the SEC 10 teams in the committee’s opening rankings, showing just how competitive the conference has been this season.
South Carolina’s appearance was particularly interesting after the Gamecocks struggled early in the season before putting together an impressive winning streak.
Plenty of Football Still Remains
While the first rankings provide an early look at the playoff picture, nothing is settled yet. Teams still have several opportunities to improve their resumes, earn signature victories and move up the rankings.
Some of the biggest upcoming matchups could completely change the playoff conversation. Alabama faces LSU, while Kentucky prepares to take on Tennessee. Ole Miss also has a massive opportunity ahead against Georgia.
The committee will release additional rankings each Tuesday before unveiling the final playoff field on December 6.
The Road to the National Championship Begins
The first rankings have officially set the stage for an exciting final stretch of college football.
Miami currently holds the top spot, but several programs remain within striking distance. With 12 playoff positions available, teams that continue winning will have opportunities to make their case.
The biggest question now is which programs will hold their positions and which teams will make a late season push.
The playoff race is officially underway, and the next several weeks could deliver plenty of surprises.
