FG declares June 12 public holiday for Democracy Day celebration

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the public holiday is in recognition of June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history and a tribute to the sacrifices, resilience, and commitment of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He noted that the current administration remains dedicated to upholding these principles for the nation’s progress.

Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the importance of a secure environment in sustaining democracy and promoting national development. He added that the Ministry of Interior, working alongside relevant security agencies, will continue to enhance internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.

The Minister urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on their civic responsibilities, embrace lawful conduct, and promote national unity.

He further encouraged citizens to remain committed to democratic ideals, stressing that the strength and success of any democracy ultimately depend on the character, responsibility, and participation of its people.
