FG debunks report of ISWAP attack on FGGC Monguno

The Federal Government has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that suspected Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists attacked the Federal Government Girls’ College, FGGC, Monguno, Borno State, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The Ministry of Education, in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said there was no attack on the school, assuring parents and guardians that students, staff and school facilities remain safe.

The ministry said its verification, including direct communication with the school authorities, confirmed that academic and boarding activities at the college are continuing without disruption under existing security arrangements.

It stated that all students, staff and boarding facilities at FGGC Monguno remain secure and fully accounted for, stressing that there had been no security breach at the institution.

According to the ministry, the report, which gained traction on social media, was capable of causing unnecessary panic among parents, guardians and members of the public.

The clarification followed reports claiming that suspected ISWAP fighters launched a pre-dawn attack on the college on Sunday, allegedly killing students and attempting to abduct others. 

Some reports also claimed that troops of Operation HADIN KAI, supported by personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force, foiled an attempted abduction at the facility.

However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said none of the students of FGGC Monguno was involved in the incident being linked to the school online. 

He explained that those affected were remedial students outside the college, adding that the Borno State Government was already taking steps to ensure their safety and welfare.

The ministry urged members of the public, bloggers and social media users to verify information through credible sources before sharing it, warning that the spread of unverified reports could fuel unnecessary fear, erode public confidence and undermine efforts to provide a safe learning environment.

It advised parents and guardians to remain calm, reiterating that there is no security threat at FGGC Monguno and reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to working with security agencies, state authorities and school managements to ensure the safety of students and staff in federal colleges nationwide.
