FBI bans drones during some World Cup matches in US

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has imposed drone flight restrictions around Hard Rock Stadium and the fan festival at Bayfront Park during the World Cup matches in Florida.

FBI Miami and its law enforcement partners will be enforcing FAA-imposed Temporary Flight Restrictions, according to a statement issued on Monday.

The announcement encouraged all operators of drones to frequently check airspace limitations using the FAA-approved apps or the TFR website.

Brett Skiles, special agent in charge, FBI Miami, noted that the ‘No Drone Zones’ rule was part of measures to ensure public safety, which remains the highest priority.

Skiles said FBI agents and officers from selected agencies have the Department of Justice’s authority to use specialized tools to intercept and seize drones that disregard the restrictions.

“Violations of these TFRs can result in civil fines up to $75,000, criminal fines up to $100,000, up to a year in prison, and seizure of the drone,” the advisory warns.

The FBI urges members of the public to maintain awareness of their environment and report any suspicious activity, including unsafe drone activity, to law enforcement.

The Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, is hosting seven 2026 FIFA World Cup games, including group stage matches, a Round of 32 fixture, a quarterfinal, and the Bronze Final.
