Fayose backs FG’s new electricity tariff collection model for universities, hospitals

Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, and former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has called on Nigerians to be committed to the costs aimed at transforming the country’s electricity supply industry.

He made this remark at the unveiling of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, if 10 percent of Nigerians change their attitude, the same will be true of Africa’s most populous country.

Fayose said RAMCO, the government-owned firm established to collect electricity tariffs on the country’s completed renewable energy projects in 25 public tertiary institutions and hospitals, is the best thing to happen to Nigeria’s electricity sector.

He noted that it is not enough to simply build new projects, as their maintenance and operational continuity are equally critical.

Fayose also emphasised the need for a shift in public attitude, stating that infrastructure will last significantly longer when Nigerians adopt an ownership mindset and protect public utilities.

“We must be committed, not only to creating but also to sustaining them. The issue is, it’s only one country, one Nigeria, one people, with benefits to the ordinary man,” he said.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of the REA, Abba Aliyu, described RAMCO as the future of productive renewable energy asset utilisation.

“RAMCO will reduce Nigeria’s dependence on government budgets, sovereign borrowing, and development finance to expand electricity access,” Aliyu said.

Earlier, DAILY POST reported that the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the Federal Government plans to introduce a fresh electricity tariff on its energy assets in 25 public institutions, including hospitals.
