Far Cry Officially Returns Spring 2027

· · 3 min read

The Far Cry series really is an absolute staple of a genre that often feels quite hard to define, given how much variety there is within it. Romping around exotic locations, shooting bad guys, and blowing stuff up is undoubtedly a tried and tested formula, but there are few who can claim to have done it as consistently, and for as long, as the various Ubisoft studios have with this franchise.

Though the most recent entry didn’t hit the mark in the way many had hoped, despite an enigmatic lead character, there’s still plenty of fun to be had with the older games in the series. In particular, Far Cry 3 is probably still the absolute best of the bunch, at least in terms of story, and it’s about to get a new release that fans on a certain platform will absolutely want to be aware of.

Over on the official Ubisoft website, the developer and publisher confirmed that they are about to bring the Far Cry franchise over to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. Their opening salvo in this case is a double drop of both Far Cry 3 and the standalone expansion Blood Dragon, which is a hugely memorable experience in its own right.

In announcing the move, Ubisoft shared a brief statement about what Nintendo fans can expect when the two games drop next Spring:

“Yes, that’s right, the FARCRY franchise is coming back to Nintendo hardware. In Spring 2027, FARCRY 3 Classic Edition and FARCRY 3 Blood Dragon Classic Edition will launch on Nintendo Switch 2.

“Widely regarded as a landmark open-world action-adventure shooter, FARCRY 3 puts players in the role of Jason Brody, a stranded tourist fighting to survive and escape a lawless tropical island. Combining first-person combat, stealth, exploration, hunting, and crafting, players are free to tackle objectives their own way across a vibrant open world filled with danger, discovery, and memorable characters.

“But that’s not all. FARCRY 3 Blood Dragon is also making its way to Nintendo Switch 2. Battle through a neon-soaked vision of the future in this retro-futuristic standalone action shooter inspired by classic 1980s sci-fi films.”

Far Cry 3 originally released all the way back in 2012, putting players in the beautiful (and fictional) tropical archipelago known as the Rook Islands. The game is most well-known for pirate antagonist Vaas Montenegro, who really steals the show and provides much of the dramatic tension the game manages to generate.

Blood Dragon is a standalone expansion to the main game that riffs on the retro-futuristic aesthetic of sci-fi movies in the 1980s. It really is a game that doesn’t look like a lot else, and it’s a ton of fun to play, even if it is a more limited experience when compared to the sprawling original.

Beyond Spring 2027, neither Ubisoft nor Nintendo have yet confirmed when exactly the game will become available to players on the platform. Equally, there has been no word on whether other Far Cry titles are making the move over, though if this release does well, don’t be surprised if that happens relatively soon.
