Fans react to UM's Dusty May departure for Dallas on social media
Fan reaction to the news that University of Michigan men’s basketball coach Dusty May is leaving for a job in the NBA came fast and furious on social media Monday.
“Can’t ever get mad when a college coach goes to the pros to give it a shot,” Barstool Sports founder — and noted Michigan alum — David Portnoy said in a video posted on his Facebook page and on X.
“I was going to name a horse Dusty Gray,” he said, wearing a UM baseball cap and Team USA soccer jersey. “I will no longer be doing that.”
He went on to wish the departing coach the best of luck.
“He brought us a championship,” Portnoy said. “It sucks for Michigan. Not the Monday news I wanted to hear.”
Basketball fan Nerderous applauded the news.
“One of the brightest minds in basketball,” he said on X. “Player development. Modern basketball. Winning culture.”
But UM fan Jeff Riger panned the move on X.
“I’ll always love Dusty May for bringing Michigan Hoops a National Championship,” he wrote. “But at the same time … Screw you Dusty! Brutal news.”
