FA Cup: Why VAR denied Chelsea two penalties in 1-0 defeat to Man City

Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has explained why Chelsea saw two penalty claimed waved off, in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Antoine Semenyo’s clever finish was the only goal at Wembley, as City claimed a domestic double.

But the game could have had a different outcome if the Blues were awarded at least one penalty in each half.

The first incident occurred in first-half injury time when Joao Pedro was barged over inside City’s box by Abdukodir Khusanov.

VAR Peter Bankes checked the incident and didn’t recommend that referee Darren England reviewed it on the pitch.

“Andulodir Khusanov comes across Joao Pedro on the edge of the penalty area,” Clattenburg told The Chelsea Chronicle.

“There is a contact but I would have been again surprised if a foul and penalty was given as Khusanov was stronger and it was shoulder to shoulder.”
