Every Upcoming Paul Mescal Movie & Show, Including The Beatles Biopics
Paul Mescal is preparing to play one of the most famous musicians in history, and apparently one movie won’t be enough. The Irish actor will portray Paul McCartney in four interconnected Beatles biopics directed by Sam Mendes, an extraordinarily ambitious project scheduled to arrive in theaters in April 2028.
It’s a considerable leap for an actor who first attracted international attention in the 2020 television adaptation of Normal People. Since then, Mescal has earned an Academy Award nomination for Aftersun, led Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, and portrayed William Shakespeare opposite Jessie Buckley in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet.
His upcoming projects suggest that music will play an increasingly significant role in his career. Besides the Beatles films, Mescal is attached to Richard Linklater’s extraordinary 20-year musical production Merrily We Roll Along. He’ll also reunite with Buckley for a romantic drama from the director of Beasts of the Southern Wild.
Mescal previously expressed a desire to spend less time in the public eye ahead of the Beatles films, although he subsequently clarified that he wasn’t taking a prolonged break from acting. With the first images of Mescal as Paul McCartney already generating considerable attention, anticipation for his upcoming performances continues to grow.
There are currently six distinct upcoming films involving Mescal, including the four Beatles productions. No new television series has been confirmed, but his theatrical slate offers plenty to anticipate.

Paul Mescal takes center stage in the McCartney-focused installment of Sam Mendes’ The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event. Rather than attempting to condense the band’s entire history into a conventional biopic, Mendes is directing four interconnected movies, each told from a different Beatle’s perspective. The project has secured the band’s official life-story and music rights, making it an unusually comprehensive undertaking.
Mescal will portray McCartney alongside Saoirse Ronan as his future wife, Linda, while David Morrissey plays his father, Jim. The actor has also indicated that he intends to perform McCartney’s songs himself, adding another challenge to an already demanding role. Although the precise scope of McCartney’s personal story hasn’t been revealed, the film is positioned as a central piece of Sony’s April 2028 theatrical event.
Untitled John Lennon Biopic (April 2028)

Harris Dickinson will portray John Lennon in the second Beatles film on Mescal’s upcoming slate. The movie approaches the band’s history through Lennon’s perspective, with Mescal returning as McCartney. Their creative partnership was fundamental to the Beatles’ success, making the relationship between the two actors particularly important to the overall project.
The ensemble also includes Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Morfydd Clark as Cynthia Lennon, and Leanne Best as Lennon’s Aunt Mimi. The first look at the Beatles cast has already encouraged comparisons between the actors and their famous counterparts. Mendes hasn’t revealed how much of Lennon’s later life the film will cover, but the project promises a distinct perspective on the band’s extraordinary history rather than a straightforward repetition of McCartney’s story.
Untitled George Harrison Biopic (April 2028)

Joseph Quinn, best known for his breakout performance in Stranger Things, will portray George Harrison in another of Mendes’ interconnected Beatles films. Mescal reprises his role as McCartney, whose relationship with Harrison evolved considerably as the band achieved international success. Harrison’s emergence as an increasingly accomplished songwriter provides particularly interesting material for a film devoted to his perspective.
Farhan Akhtar has also joined the cast as Ravi Shankar, the celebrated Indian musician whose influence on Harrison became a significant part of the guitarist’s artistic development. Although the filmmakers haven’t revealed which periods of Harrison’s life will receive the most attention, the casting suggests that his musical interests beyond the Beatles will be important. For Mescal, the project offers another opportunity to explore the group’s complicated relationships through a different member’s experiences.
Untitled Ringo Starr Biopic (April 2028)

Barry Keoghan will portray Beatles drummer Ringo Starr in the fourth film of Mendes’ ambitious project. Keoghan joins Mescal, Dickinson, and Quinn in an ensemble intended to recreate the band’s personal relationships from four different perspectives. Unlike Lennon and McCartney, whose songwriting partnership often dominates accounts of the Beatles, Starr provides an opportunity to examine the group’s history through a less frequently explored viewpoint.
The real Starr has already shown considerable interest in the production, having discussed elements of the screenplay with Mendes. As detailed in ScreenRant’s coverage of Starr’s involvement, the musician has offered feedback on how his personal experiences should be represented. Sony plans to release all four films during April 2028, although the exact theatrical rollout remains unsettled.
Hold On To Your Angels (TBA)
Mescal will reunite with Jessie Buckley in Hold On to Your Angels, a romantic drama written and directed by Benh Zeitlin. The filmmaker, whose debut Beasts of the Southern Wild received four Academy Award nominations, returns to the landscapes of southern Louisiana for a story about an outlaw and a woman described as a shepherd of lost souls. Their relationship develops against the backdrop of a deteriorating bayou community.
The production marks another collaboration between Mescal and Buckley following Hamnet, with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment among the companies involved. As confirmed in the announcement of their upcoming reunion, the project is expected to begin filming in Louisiana in early 2027. No release date has been announced, although Zeitlin’s distinctive approach to magical realism makes this one of the more intriguing films on Mescal’s schedule.
Merrily We Roll Along (TBA)

•Daniel Radcliffe starred in the 2023–2024 Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along.
Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical Merrily We Roll Along is easily the most unusual production on Mescal’s upcoming slate. He plays Franklin Shepard, a composer whose pursuit of commercial success gradually damages his closest friendships. Ben Platt portrays his longtime collaborator Charley Kringas, while Beanie Feldstein plays their friend Mary Flynn.
Inspired by his experience making Boyhood, Linklater is filming the musical over approximately 20 years, allowing the actors to age naturally alongside their characters. Production began in 2019, with Mescal joining after filming was already underway. The director recently confirmed that three of the project’s nine sections have been completed, with another scheduled to begin filming in the coming months. As ScreenRant previously explored, the undertaking requires an extraordinary commitment from its cast. Filming is expected to continue until around 2040, and no official release date has been established.
