Everton Boss Questions Man City Verdict As Left-back Faces Late Fitness Test: Fair Or Not?

· · 3 min read

David Moyes has challenged the Premier League to demonstrate consistent treatment of their clubs after Everton suffered a points deduction, while providing an encouraging update on Vitalii Mykolenko ahead of Sunday’s match against Hull City.

Everton received a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules in November 2023. An appeal subsequently reduced that punishment to 6 points, although the episode left lasting frustration at Goodison Park.

Manchester City now face intense scrutiny after an independent commission found the club guilty of the charges brought against them concerning alleged financial regulation breaches between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. City have appealed against the verdict, arguing that the commission’s decision contains serious errors of law, principle and fact.

Moyes, who was not managing Everton during their original points deduction, questioned the apparent difference in how the cases have progressed.

“I hope it’s not just Everton who are getting picked on here,” the Scot said, expressing frustration over the club’s treatment by officials and the wider football authorities.

However, Moyes acknowledged City’s contribution to English football. He praised their managers and players, explaining how their quality forced opposing teams to adopt defensive approaches.

His comments highlight a difficult balance for Everton. The club must protect their interests while respecting the sporting achievements of rivals, particularly as the financial case continues through the appeals process.

Everton: Mykolenko fitness offers Moyes hope

Away from the financial debate, Moyes must settle his starting lineup for Sunday’s trip to Hull City at the MKM Stadium. Mykolenko suffered a minor injury while representing Ukraine, leaving Everton uncertain about his availability.

The left-back has a chance to feature, and the additional recovery day could help him pass the final fitness assessment. His availability would give Moyes a natural option at left-back and preserve the defensive balance he prefers.

Should Mykolenko miss out, Moyes could deploy a versatile defender on the left rather than disrupt several positions. That approach would help Everton maintain their back-four structure without taking unnecessary risks.

Christian Nørgaard presents another selection question. The midfielder has resumed full training and recently gained valuable minutes in a behind-closed-doors fixture. However, Moyes admitted that the player might need more time before returning to competitive action.

Squad shortages could force the manager to consider Nørgaard earlier than planned, although his comments suggest that a cautious approach remains preferable.

Opinion: Can Everton turn the pressure into a tactical advantage?

Everton should separate the financial controversy from their preparation for Hull City. Moyes can defend the club publicly while demanding concentration and discipline from his players.

Mykolenko’s availability matters because a recognised left-back offers greater defensive balance. If he misses out, Everton should protect the replacement with midfield cover instead of allowing Hull to exploit that flank.

Nørgaard should start only if his fitness supports the workload. Everton need reliable midfield protection, but rushing an underprepared player could create another selection problem.

Moyes’ strongest response will come through organisation, controlled possession and disciplined defending. Everton cannot influence the commission’s wider process during Sunday’s match, but they can control their own performance.
