ESPN makes decision on Matt Miller scandal

Longtime ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller has been at the center of a high-profile financial scandal following a life-threatening car crash that resulted in the amputation of his left arm. Now, he is stepping away from ESPN to focus on his health, but it doesn’t sound like ESPN is going to remain silent on the scandal.

After a GoFundMe that was set up to help cover his medical costs, reports began to surface accusing Miller of missing payments for various endeavors, including his many fantasy football leagues. As Miller now steps away from ESPN, it sounds like ESPN is planning to address the scandal at a later time.

Matt Miller Accident and Scandal

On June 23, Miller shared on social media that he had suffered significant injuries in a car crash, including a life-saving amputation of his left arm.

“As a result of the accident, I sustained significant injuries, including multiple fractures and broken ribs. I also underwent a life-saving amputation of my left arm. While I have a long road ahead, I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time.”

Shortly after, however, a Reddit thread titled “Matt Miller Leagues and Scam” began to go viral, leading to Miller’s own social media posts getting inundated with replies addressing accusations against him.

Awful Announcing went on to report on accusations of missed payments and other instances of overpromising and underdelivering across various endeavors, including many fantasy leagues where winners claim to have never received their winnings. Missouri Attorney General’s Office has since confirmed to Awful Announcing that it had opened an investigation into Miller.

Matt Miller Steps Away From ESPN

On Friday, Miller shared an update on social media, revealing that he was stepping away from his duties at ESPN and would be placed on leave indefinitely.

“A quick update: The surgery to remove my left arm was successful with hopes of an eventual prosthetic replacement. Similarly, the femur and patella surgeries were also successful and the fantastic surgery team was able to save my left leg,” Miller wrote in a post on X this week.

“To best focus on my healing and recovery, I’m stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN. Thank you to all for the prayers and thoughts; please keep them coming.”

ESPN Addresses the Scandal

It was not immediately clear whether Miller’s leave from ESPN was truly related to his health concerns or if it was a result of the scandal. However, Sean Keeley of Awful Announcing reported this week that his leave was indeed related to his health, and ESPN will address the scandal at a later date.

“Awful Announcing has learned that Miller’s leave from the company is due to his current medical condition, but when appropriate, the company plans on following up on the issues raised on social media and our previous reporting,” Keeley wrote on Friday.

We’ll have to see what comes of the scandal. For now, however, it seems like his health is the primary concern.
