Erling Haaland and Norway came within moments of extending their dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Instead, a stoppage-time winner from Jude Bellingham ended Norway’s historic campaign and sent England into the semifinals with a dramatic 2-1 victory.

It was a heartbreaking finish for Haaland, who was held scoreless in one of the biggest matches of his international career. But shortly after the final whistle, one of his biggest supporters made sure he knew she was proud of what Norway accomplished. Girlfriend Isabel Haugseng Johansen shared an emotional message following the crushing defeat, reminding Haaland that the World Cup journey was about much more than one painful result.

Following Norway’s elimination, Johansen took to Instagram Stories with a heartfelt tribute to Haaland. Rather than focusing on the disappointment of the loss, she reflected on the memories created during Norway’s remarkable World Cup run and expressed her unwavering support for the Manchester City striker.

“The adventure is over for now, but the memories we will carry with us forever. I am so proud of you, always,” Johansen wrote in Norwegian.

The message quickly circulated across social media as fans reacted to Norway’s emotional exit from the tournament. Johansen has been a constant presence throughout the World Cup, traveling to the United States to support Haaland and Norway during the nation’s deepest tournament run in decades.

Norway’s fairytale run ends in heartbreaking fashion

Norway entered the quarterfinals looking to continue one of the biggest stories of the 2026 World Cup. After qualifying for the tournament for the first time in 28 years, Norway advanced to the final eight before running into an England squad loaded with world-class talent.

Andreas Schjelderup gave Norway hope by opening the scoring in the 36th minute, but Bellingham answered just before halftime to level the match. Norway believed it had regained the lead early in the second half when Torbjørn Heggem headed home following a corner kick. However, the goal was disallowed after officials ruled Haaland had committed a foul in the buildup by pushing an England defender.

The match remained tied until deep into stoppage time when Bellingham struck again in the 93rd minute to complete England’s comeback. Haaland was substituted during extra time as Norway searched unsuccessfully for an equalizer.

Bigger picture remains bright for Haaland and Norway

Although the defeat was devastating, Norway’s tournament represented a major step forward for the national team. The country reached the World Cup for the first time since 1998 and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals, exceeding many expectations entering the tournament.

For Haaland, the future remains incredibly promising. Still just 25 years old, one of the world’s most prolific strikers should have multiple opportunities to lead Norway on the international stage in future World Cups and European Championships.

Sunday’s defeat may sting for now, but Norway’s breakthrough campaign showed the nation is once again capable of competing with soccer’s elite.
