Eriksen has Wolfsburg contract terminated by mutual consent

Wolfsburg have announced an agreement has been reached to terminate Christian Eriksen’s contract nine months early. 

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg from Manchester United on a two-year contract last year and was part of the team that were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2025-26. 

However, Eriksen has now made the decision to move back to Denmark, having collapsed while playing for his nation in a friendly against Ukraine in June. 

That incident came five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland at the European Championships.

Eriksen was fitted with an implanted defibrillator that would be able to render immediate medical support, a measure that proved lifesaving during his collapse earlier this year.

“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I am pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” Eriksen told Wolfsburg’s website.

“My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many ups and downs. I know that the club is now in good hands to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead of it.

“I would like to thank everyone who has accompanied me to Wolfsburg from the bottom of my heart. It was a great pleasure to play for you and I will remember that time fondly.”

VfL and Christian have mutually agreed to terminate his contract early. It’s important for him right now to be closer to his family in Denmark.

The 34-year-old made 34 appearances in all competitions for Wolfsburg, scoring three goals and providing nine assists. 

A statement from Wolfsburg’s Managing Director, Dieter Hecking, added: “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s.

“We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.

“He has already experienced and achieved a lot in his extraordinary career. It is all the more remarkable how approachable and down-to-earth we got to know him at VfL.

“Despite the short time, he left a lasting impression on his team-mates, staff and fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the best from the bottom of our hearts.”
