EPL: You can’t win anything with Carrick as manager – Carragher to Man United

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has said that Manchester United will not win the Premier League or UEFA Champions League titles under Michael Carrick.

Carragher said he does not regard Carrick as the right manager to lead the Red Devils to success.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Carragher stated that Manchester United lack the managerial leadership necessary to reclaim their former glory, adding that Carrick’s appointment was a result of last season’s performances.

“I don’t believe Manchester United will win a league title or a UCL with Michael Carrick, no. I have stated this openly, but I think it is appropriate that he holds the position at this moment. His results have been impressive. Currently, following last night’s performance, with Manchester United back in the Champions League, they need to establish themselves as regular contenders in the Champions League once more.

“They have signed new players this season, but I believe what Michael Carrick has achieved, to his credit, is that he has delivered excellent results and has prevented Manchester United from becoming the chaotic team they have been in recent years. He has brought a sense of calm.

“However, will he be the person to elevate them to the next level? I do not see that happening, but this is not meant as a criticism. I think he has performed exceptionally well since his arrival. If Manchester United secure Champions League football again, that would represent a very successful campaign.”

The Red Devils appointed Carrick on a two-year contract with an option for a third year. He took over as interim manager in January 2026, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United began the Premier League season with an unexpected 2-0 defeat by Hull City. The Red Devils were stunned by the newly promoted team, despite having more attempts on goal and controlling more than a third of the possession.

They managed to bounce back with a 5-2 win at home over Ipswich Town, but a 2-2 draw at Everton left them 11th in the Premier League table.
