EPL: Panel rules Arsenal wrongly denied penalty against Aston Villa

· · 1 min read

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that Arsenal midfielder, Bruno Guimaraes, should have gotten a penalty at Aston Villa after he was fouled by Ian Maatsen.

The KMI Panel further noted that Maatsen should have been shown a second yellow card and been sent off after the incident.

Arsenal were already 1-0 up when the foul happened in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Guimaraes broke into the box and looked set to shoot, before Maatsen made a desperate lunge to stop the Brazil international.

The KMI Panel voted 5:0, ruling that referee Jarred Gillett made an on-field error and that it was a missed intervention by video assistant referee James Bell.

“Clear contact was made on the attacker’s standing leg and Maatsen made no contact with the ball,” the KMI Panel said.

It added that “the challenge was reckless and therefore a second caution should have been awarded”.
