The result marked Coventry City’s third league win of the season.

Coventry City made a bright start to the encounter, dominating the opening exchanges before taking the lead through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto in the 17th minute.

Awoniyi doubled the hosts’ advantage 20 minutes later, scoring his first Premier League goal for the Sky Blues since joining the club.

The 29-year-old Nigeria international has now made six league appearances for Frank Lampard’s side.

Jack Rudoni extended Coventry City’s lead with a third goal six minutes before the hour mark, putting the hosts firmly in control.

Sunderland managed to pull one back through Omar Alderete deep into stoppage time, but it proved too late to prevent Coventry City from claiming all three points.
