England's Jordan Henderson injures wrist in Mexico World Cup celebration

July 6 (UPI) — England midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a serious wrist injury while celebrating with teammates after a World Cup victory over Mexico.

Henderson fell over an advertising board as the Three Lions celebrated behind a goal Sunday at Mexico City Stadium. His status is now in question for a quarterfinal meeting with Norway.

“He injured his wrist,” England manager Thomas Tuchel told reporters. “He is at the moment at the hospital, so it’s a quite serious injury.

“It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure or what’s going on.”

Henderson did not play in the chaotic 3-2 triumph, which sealed the Three Lions’ placement in the quarterfinal.

Fellow midfielder Jude Bellingham sparked the victory with two scores in the first half. Harry Kane added a 60th-minute penalty kick, but also triggered a Mexico penalty kick in the 69th minute, which tightened the score.

Henderson totaled 119 minutes of action during the Three Lions’ World Cup run. Footage of Henderson’s injury sequence surfaced on social media, showing the midfielder attempt to clear the board behind a teammate. He placed his hands on the board and cleared it with his right foot, but clipped the other side as he attempted a hurdle.

He then fell directly on his left wrist. Several teammates called for medical personnel to help Henderson, who was stretchered off and taken to a hospital.

“Hendo fell when he was jumping over the barrier, so he’s hurt himself,” England defender Dan Burn said. “I’m not entirely sure what the outcome is. Sending him best wishes.”

The Three Lions also are set to meet Norway without the help of defender Jarell Quansah, who received a red card in the 54th minute of Sunday’s win. The infraction caused the Three Lions to play with 10 men, against Mexico’s 11, for the majority of the second half of their Round of 16 win.

“Jarell is very upset, of course,” Tuchel said. “It’s disappointing and a setback because we were good in the match.”

The No. 4 Three Lions will battle the No. 19 Norwegians at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday in Miami. The winner will take on the winner of a Round of 16 meeting between No. 15 Switzerland and No. 11 Colombia or No. 2 Argentina or No. 24 Egypt in a World Cup semifinal July 15 in Atlanta.
