Edvinsson reportedly asking for a trade, with little progress on new contract

DETROIT – Dylan Larkin isn’t the only player looking to leave the Red Wings.

Simon Edvinsson could be joining him.

Elliotte Friedman, the Sportsnet Canada analyst, during his Saturday Headlines report Saturday, October 3, said Edvinsson would prefer a trade out of the Wings’ organization.

Edvinsson, a talented young defenseman, is an unsigned restricted free agent. Edvinsson worked out with the Wings during training camp – he didn’t play any preseason games or participate in intra-squad scrimmages – but returned to Sweden after camp ended earlier this week and negotiations on a new contract stalled.

Friedman said the two sides are not negotiating and Edvinsson would prefer a trade at this point, as he’s frustrated with the contract stalemate. Edvinsson is skating and training with his former Swedish team, Frolunda.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Friday, before the Wings’ regular season opener, that signing Edvinsson is important for the organization.

“Simon is a priority for us. We’re still working (toward an agreement),” Horcoff said. “There’s a lot of urgency. Simon is a big part of our team and we’re doing everything we can.”

Edvinsson would join Larkin, the Wings’ former captain, in asking for a trade out of the Wings organization. Larkin asked for a trade in early June, when Steve Yzerman was still the Wings’ GM, but no progress has been made on a potential trade.

Larkin is on the injured list, tending to an upper body injury, but has been increasing his workload in practices since late last week. Coach Todd McLellan is hopeful Larkin could return to the lineup Tuesday, October 6 against Ottawa.
