Edmond Tapsoba ‘focused’ on Bayer Leverkusen but doesn’t rule out a future departure

Edmond Tapsoba was appointed as Bayer Leverkusen’s new captain for 2026/27, replacing Robert Andrich, while Patrik Schick has been named as vice-captain.

Subject to a departure from Leverkusen, with Paris Saint-Germain showing a previous interest in the Burkinabe, Tapsoba signed a contract extension until June 2031 in April 2026. But, at the time, he wasn’t ready for a move.

“For me, it’s clear I need to take the next step before I perhaps leave or stay forever,” Tapsoba told Kicker. “But first, I have to take the next step.” Now, he’s taken that next step by succeeding Robert Andrich as Leverkusen captain.

The 27-year-old, a Bundesliga and DFB Pokal champion, did, though, keep his options open. “You should never say never in life,” he added. “But right now, my whole heart and mind are completely focused on Bayer. We’ll see what the future holds – perhaps in the near future, or perhaps in the distant future.”
