England’s move in delaying Brendon McCullum’s exit as Test head coach has been widely criticised amid the retirement of Ben Stokes.

According to a report published in The Telegraph, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) failed to heed Stokes’ request for finding a replacement for McCullum after the poor show of English team during the 2025-26 Ashes series. 

All of these recent events have added another complication to England’s tough transition process after McCullum’s exit from the job, shortly after Stokes quit all formats of international cricket.

As such, the report effectively highlights that the ECB wasted “six months” due to their delaying decision in regard to changing their coach.

The ECB finally decided to sack McCullum as Test coach on Sunday due to a string of disappointing results, which include losing seven out of their last nine Tests and a 2-1 series defeat at home against New Zealand.

While being sacked from red-ball cricket, McCullum will remain the coach for ODIs and T20Is of England, as he successfully guided his white-ball team to the No. 1 position in ICC T20Is rankings.

Meanwhile, England is hunting for a new Test coach in the wake of their series against Pakistan, with former England coach Andy Flower rumored to be one of the favourites.

And after Stokes’ resignation left a gap in leadership, Harry Brook is tipped to be appointed as England’s next Test skipper soon.

Thus, the ECB’s decision to sack McCullum right after that is seen as part of a larger effort to reset the Test system ahead of the Ashes in 2027. The reports indicate that McCullum was sacked due to bad results, preparation and discipline issues.

The Bigger Picture: ECB’s timing of McCullum decision raises questions

Whether or not McCullum truly deserved to be fired is debatable, but the timing of the ECB’s decision to make such an announcement would receive much flak. If it truly was time for a coaching change, doing so right after the Ashes would have helped England move forward and solve issues that their captain was said to have reported.

The issue here is that England went into yet another tough period without knowing what to expect from their Test team. The problem is that now that McCullum is gone and Stokes has retired, the ECB needs to figure out how to rebuild their management and dressing room culture, something which would have been easier to do earlier on.
