Eagles’ losing streak continues in Commanders defeat | How it happened

· · 5 min read

LANDOVER, Md. — The Philadelphia Eagles lost again, this time to the Washington Commanders, 27-10, on Sunday night at Northwest Stadium.

The Eagles (2-6) are now on a six-game losing streak and sit in last place in the NFC East.

Here’s how the Eagles’ latest loss unfolded.

FOURTH QUARTER

1:52 — Commanders 27, Eagles 10

The Commanders score again with a Rachaad White short-yardage run — and get the two-point conversion for fun.

What an ugly loss by the Eagles.

3:43 — Commanders 19, Eagles 10

Drew Stevens’ field goal is good. That should do it.

8:58 — Commanders 16, Eagles 10

You can’t make this stuff up. The Eagles lined up to go for it on fourth-and-4 at the Commanders’ 13-yard line, and a false start by Markel Bell nixed that. Jake Elliott made the ensuing field goal, only for it to be negated by an illegal formation by Jordan Mailata. Then, Elliott doinked his 41-yard attempt. Bad things happen to bad teams.

THIRD QUARTER

1:33 — Commanders 16, Eagles 10

The defense didn’t give up a touchdown and held firm in the red zone. That’s a positive after Quinyon Mitchell got roasted by Treylon Burks for a 53-yard gain. This is still a one-score game. Can the Eagles’ offense do anything with it?

2:51 — Commanders 13, Eagles 10

The Eagles, at the Commanders’ 37-yard line, needed a few yards to move the chains. But at the very least, they couldn’t take a sack on the precipice of field-goal range. What happened was even worse. Tanner McKee was stripped, and it was recovered by the Commanders.

This offense just can’t get out of its own way. A brutal watch.

We’ll take that 😁

There’s Jalen Carter. The highest-paid defensive tackle in the league looked like it there, bringing down Jayden Daniels for a third-down sack. Big play by Carter, who struggled mightily on Monday vs. Dallas (and really for most of the season).

The Eagles’ offense needs to respond on this drive.

SECOND QUARTER

0:19 — Commanders 13, Eagles 10

The Eagles blew a two-for-one opportunity at the end of the half and instead go into the locker room losing.

The Eagles had the ball with a little more than a minute left in the second quarter with two timeouts. But after Elijah Mitchell ran out of bounds short of the sticks, Tanner McKee’s go ball to Makai Lemon fell incomplete. Why did the Eagles throw it deep on third-and-2? No idea.

Then, the Eagles’ defense buckled and allowed a field-goal drive. The only reason why the Commanders stayed out of the end zone was an errant throw by Jayden Daniels — who got crushed by Nolan Smith on the play prior.

The Eagles’ offense will get the ball to start the second half. They have to come out strong.

4:56 — Eagles 10, Commanders 10

The Eagles’ defense got cooked on that drive: 11 plays, 89 yards and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs. The Eagles’ defensive line got run all over. The pass rush was non-existent. Diggs was wide open on the TD. Vic Fangio’s unit looked how it looked on Monday vs. the Cowboys. The Eagles have to tighten things up.

10:46 — Eagles 10, Commanders 3

An unblocked pressure leads to a sack of Tanner McKee and a drive that stalled out. Saquon Barkley was on the sideline the whole time, working out his hamstring and back injuries. Elijah Mitchell had some juice. It just didn’t lead to anything due to another missed assignment on the offensive line.

Shy Tuttle was very excited to get this sack 😤

FIRST QUARTER

0:28 — Eagles 10, Commanders 3

Washington answers with a 56-yard field goal by Drew Stevens. The Commanders got the ground game going a bit there. But Jayden Daniels is not on the mark so far. Had a wide-open receiver on third down and sailed it out of bounds.

4:27 — Eagles 10, Commanders 0

After a couple of Commanders penalties, Drew Mukuba forced a fumble on tight end Chig Okonkwo, recovered by Zack Baun. A few plays later, Saquon Barkley found the end zone. Barkley snagged a 24-yard wheel route completion. Then, Barkley went in the Wildcat with offensive lineman Willie Lampkin as the fullback. Barkley scored from a few yards out.

The Birds’ 10-point lead is their largest in a game since Week 4.

6:10 — Eagles 3, Commanders 0

The Eagles had to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Jake Elliott, but they had a little something cooking on that drive. Tanner McKee had a nicely layered 19-yard completion to Makai Lemon followed by a 12-yard completion to Darius Cooper with the blitz in his face. The Eagles stalled out, but a couple of good signs to build on.

10:33 — Eagles 0, Commanders 0

That drive was less interesting. Three-and-out for the Eagles and a punt. Saquon Barkley is out there at least.

12:09 — Eagles 0, Commanders 0

This game has already had a bit of everything. The Eagles allowed a 44-yard opening kickoff return; the kickoff coverage team has been brutal this year.

Washington got it down into field-goal range. Eagles safety Drew Mukuba got hurt on an offsides free play INT. Then the Commanders had two straight false starts to back them up from a third-and-1 to a third-and-11. Washington had to settle for a long field goal try, which Drew Stevens missed.
