Duke alum Alex Smalley earns highest FedEx Cup finish of his career

Former Duke Blue Devil Alex Smalley wrapped up his first career Tour Championship appearance Sunday, marking the highest finish in the FedEx Cup standings throughout his career on the PGA Tour. Unfortunately for Smalley, the week didn’t treat him too kindly, as he failed to make a run at the title. After 36 holes, Smalley sat at five-under par, but back-to-back scores of 72 on Saturday and Sunday led him to finish one-under for the tournament.

This placed him 27th of 30 golfers, ahead of Robert MacIntyre, Gary Woodland and J.J. Spaun, who was forced to withdraw from the event Thursday with a shoulder injury.

With the 27th place finish, Smalley earned $370,000, adding to the highest-earning season of his career. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler went on to win the event at 16-under par, coming back from a 54-hole deficit to take the lead from Viktor Hovland.
