Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Episode 5 Release Date & Time

· · 4 min read

The wait is finally over as Goku officially unlocks Super Saiyan God in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus. After Oolong folded under pressure and threw scissors against Beerus’s rock in their high-stakes game of rock-paper-scissors, Goku stepped in at the last second with a clever idea: use Bulma’s birthday bingo Dragon Balls to summon Shenron and get some answers.

Learning from the Eternal Dragon that the legendary warrior isn’t hiding somewhere in space, the Z Fighters finally get the answer they need. Even better, Shenron actually manages to keep his cool around Beerus this time, unlike his panicked reaction in the 2015 broadcast. He explains the ancient Namekian ritual, which requires five righteous Saiyans to pour their energy into a sixth. With Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks alongside Goku, the group is still one Saiyan short until Videl reveals her pregnancy, making unborn Pan the final piece needed to awaken Goku’s fiery crimson transformation.

Even for fans who have already watched the 2013 Battle of Gods movie or the original 2015 Dragon Ball Super, Toei Animation’s remake gives this moment a fresh feel. The tighter pacing, trimmed filler, and massive visual overhaul finally give one of modern shonen’s most iconic transformations the treatment it deserves. And with Goku now standing in the realm of the gods, the real showdown with Beerus is finally about to begin.

With Goku finally unlocking the fiery crimson aura of Super Saiyan God, the real action in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is about to begin. So far, most of the fights have been little more than one-sided beatdowns. Beerus knocked out Super Saiyan 3 Goku in just two hits on King Kai’s planet before effortlessly taking down the Z Fighters aboard Bulma’s cruise ship. Needless to say, the God of Destruction hasn’t exactly had to break a sweat yet.

The 2015 broadcast had some decent moments during Goku and Beerus’s showdown, but stretched-out pacing and rough, off-model frames often took away from the excitement. This remake has already looked much sharper, thanks to Toei Animation’s visual overhaul under animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro. Episode and the upcoming episode should finally give that work room to shine as Goku and Beerus take their battle from Earth’s skies straight into the upper atmosphere.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Trims The Bloated 2015 Anime Down To Pure Action

One of the biggest reasons this remake feels so much faster is that Toei is keeping it much closer to Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super manga. Rather than stretching every fight and conversation, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus delivers an almost 1:1 adaptation while cutting out much of the original anime’s filler. And that makes a huge difference when compared to the 2015 series.

Instead of dragging its first three arcs across 41 episodes, the remake is reportedly listed for just 19 episodes. The God of Destruction Beerus arc gets six episodes, followed by another six for Frieza Revival, before the story moves into the Universe 6 Tournament. With only two episodes left in the Beerus saga, Goku’s first real test against a God of Destruction is almost over. After that, viewers won’t have to wait long to see Frieza return in his Golden form, while Goku and Vegeta begin their training to unlock Super Saiyan Blue.
