Dolphins rookie shares why transition to the NFL is a work in progress

The Miami Dolphins took 13 players over the course of the three days of the 2026 NFL Draft, including Texas offensive lineman DJ Campbell, whom Miami selected in the sixth round (No. 200 overall).

In his five seasons with the Longhorns, Campbell started 43 games and appeared in 50. He earned All-SEC honors in his final season.

While the Dolphins have some of their rookies playing a ton early in their rookie campaigns, Campbell has been a healthy scratch for the first two games of the season. Speaking with the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the offensive lineman explained his struggles transitioning to the NFL.

“It’s a complete difference,” Campbell said. “I was taught in college to lift off the ball and get to my combo moves and drop into combo blocks. Here it’s a little different. Running off the ball now, everything is faster. It’s a work in progress.”

Miami’s offensive line could use some real help, as quarterback Malik Willis has been sacked nine times, which is the most of any Dolphins quarterback in the first two games of a season.

At this point, Campbell is listed as a third-string guard along their line, but he’s focused on learning and improving.

“No, it didn’t disappoint me,” Campbell said. “I trust the coaches. I won’t say it was a surprise. [Offensive line] coach [Zach] Yenser has been supportive, said, ‘Stay ready.’ That they’re going to need me.”

If Campbell can show that he’s improved, Miami may move him up the depth chart. Maybe he could even start some point if Austin Jackson continues to struggle as the team’s right tackle.
