‘Does WNBA not have coaches?’ Angel Reese draws harsh criticism from former ESPN star

While Angel Reese is the most dominant and consistent rebounder in WNBA history at this point in her career, she has struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball, and one former ESPN star called her out for it this week.

Through her first two seasons in the league, Reese led the entire WNBA in rebounds each season. She is the only player in WNBA history to average at least 12.0 rebounds per game in a season, doing it in both 2024 and 2025 while also leading the league in double-doubles last season with 23.

Needless to say, her rebounding is dominant. Her shooting, however, could certainly use work.

So far this season, Reese is shooting a respectable 41.5% from the field. However, the vast majority of those shots have come within five feet of the basket. In fact, through her first several games, Reese did not make a single shot from beyond five feet from the rim.

Reese’s three-point shooting has been nothing short of abysmal so far this season, as the Atlanta Dream star is shooting just 9.1% from beyond the three-point arc, and it seems like her shooting mechanics could be to blame.

Ahead of Thursday night’s game between the Dream and Reese’s longtime rival, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, Reese could be seen working on her jump shot from the corner.

In the video, Reese appeared to be struggling with her mechanics. Reese had a major hitch in her shot as the ball was not coming out of her hand smoothly. She was quickly called out by former ESPN star Dan Dakich, who said that she was “literally doing it backwards.”

“My gawd…. She’s literally doing it backwards,” Dakich wrote in a post on X. “Does WNBA not have coaches?”

Dakich is a former Indiana Hoosiers guard who then served as the head coach at Bowling Green for a decade. He also served as a college basketball color commentator and analyst for ESPN for over a decade until he left the network in 2021.

Clearly, he thinks Reese still has work to do if she is going to improve her shooting form and become a consistent jump shooter.

The good news is that the Atlanta Dream have been successful despite her offensive limitations, as the team currently tops the WNBA Eastern Conference standings with a 6-3 record. We’ll have to see whether or not they can keep up that dominance throughout the season.
