Dodgers Win Fourth of July ShowdownThe Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Saturday, July 4th, taking their third straight game against their division foe.
The Dodgers were amazing in every phase of the game, with timely hits and quality pitching. Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a great start — going seven innings of scoreless baseball.
He gave up just three hits, two walks, and got 10 strikeouts on the day. The Padres had no answers for the Japanese righty, lowering his ERA to 2.49.
Then, the bullpen came in and delivered two more shutout innings, with Brock Stewart, Alex Vesia, and Will Klein pitching like they have all season long.
Offensively, things were not as electric. Freddie Freeman was amazing at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk. He drove in two runs, including a home run.
The only other players to get a hit were Andy Pages, Alex Freeland, and Mookie Betts — but it was enough to get past a Padres team that has struggled hitting-wise.
Also, the Dodgers were without Shohei Ohtani, who missed the game due to rest and a sore bicep.
The Dodgers’ National League West lead over the Padres grew to 15 games as they improved to 59-21. San Diego has now been overtaken by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who sit in second place in the division, another 14 games down on the Dodgers.
The division lead is getting to a point where the Dodgers can get quite comfortable up top, but if they want to secure a playoff bye, they need to keep their foot on the pedal.
The Dodgers close out their series against the Padres on Sunday. They can continue to grow the gap between themselves and the Padres.
The game starts at 4:20 p.m. PST at Dodger Stadium. This will be the last time they play the Padres until September.
Emmet Sheehan, who has been inconsistent, will be facing off against JP Sears in a game where the Dodgers will be massive favorites, considering the pitching advantage and bullpen usage edge.
