MLB history could be made with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Chris Sale on the mound in Game 3 of the National League Division Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. Both pitchers are capable of accomplishing historic feats. Regardless of how they perform, however, history will be made just by the two pitchers starting the game, according to Sarah Langs.

“Chris Sale vs Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be the 3rd SP matchup in postseason history between pitchers who had previously gotten the final out of a World Series, joining: 1938 WS G2 Dizzy Dean, Lefty Gomez 1911 (and) WS G3 Christy Mathewson, Jack Coombs,” Langs reported.

Yamamoto and Sale are among the best pitchers in the sport. Both are National League Cy Young candidates this year. While neither player will likely win the 2026 Cy Young — Jacob Misiorowski is the clear favorite — they are both stars and Tuesday’s Game 3 could be a pitcher’s duel.

The NLDS is currently tied. LA earned a 5-3 Game 1 win at home before Atlanta bounced back with a 3-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Winning at least one contest on the road was surely the goal for Atlanta, and the ball club accomplished the feat.

The series now shifts back to Atlanta where LA will need to win at least one game to avoid elimination. The Dodgers obviously wouldn’t mind clinching a series victory with two victories on the road, but they will need to force a Game 5 back in LA at the very least.

Game 3 is scheduled for 6 PM ET in what could be a low-scoring matchup.
