Dodgers president Stan Kasten reiterates that team won't be sold amid Mark Walter investigation: 'They’re not for sale'
Since, news has emerged that Walter, who’s served as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ controlling owner for the past 14 years, and fellow Dodgers owner Todd Boehly are reportedly in talks to sell their shares of the Premier League’s Chelsea F.C. Also notable, Walter looked to cash out early from the Lakers’ and Dodgers’ television deal with Charter Communications, according to John Ourand of Puck.
But Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten dismissed those reports on Friday, per The Athletic, describing them as “mischaracterized” while reiterating to reporters at Dodger Stadium ahead of a series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates that the team that’s won three World Series under their leadership won’t be sold.
“The Dodgers are not being sold,” Kasten said, via Fredo Cervantes of The Sporting Tribune. “They’re not gonna be sold. They’re not for sale. There’s no process that has been started to sell it, period.”
Kasten added, according to The Athletic: “We are planning only to win.”
A week and a half ago, Kasten explained to media that Walter’s pending sale of the Lakers “is a Lakers story.”
“It’s not really a Dodgers story,” Kasten said on Aug. 12, via The Athletic.
Additionally, Kasten noted Friday that the Professional Women’s Hockey League, which Walter owns as well, isn’t for sale, either, per The Athletic’s report. That comes on the heels of TWG Global informing Racer that it’s not considering a sale of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team “or any other part of TWG Motorsport.”
In the background of all this is a federal investigation surrounding Walter, the founder of TWG Global and the CEO of Guggenheim Partners.
Walter, 66, and his insurance companies are reportedly being investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, along with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
At the heart of that investigation, per the Los Angeles Times, is whether Walter’s insurers didn’t adequately disclose some of their private credit investments as involving related parties.
“I know nothing involving the Dodgers is part of the investigation,” Kasten said, according to The Associated Press, which reported that Kasten declined to go into specifics.
Although Walter is reportedly facing a cash crunch, Kasten told reporters Friday, per The Athletic, that the Dodgers’ day-to-day operations aren’t expected to be affected.
