The Los Angeles Dodgers‘ bid for a third straight World Series title ended in stunning fashion on Thursday night, and Dave Roberts did not reach for excuses. The Milwaukee Brewers completed a four-game sweep of the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series with a 6-4 win in Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but Milwaukee chipped away before Garrett Mitchell’s solo home run in the sixth put the Brewers ahead for good. David Hamilton added an insurance homer, and Aaron Ashby closed it out with three scoreless innings.
Speaking with Ken Rosenthal after the loss, Roberts kept his message to his players simple.

“I just said that we got beat. They beat us, and they outplayed us,” Roberts said. “For me, there’s nothing to be ashamed of, and it’s not from lack of care, want, preparation, and that’s sport.”

Roberts gave Milwaukee full credit. “Honestly, they just out-pitched us, they out-hit us, they played defense better,” he said. “They didn’t make any mistakes and they didn’t walk many guys.”
Roberts then singled out Jake Bauers, William Contreras and Hamilton for putting together tough at-bats, and he tipped his cap to president of baseball operations Matt Arnold, manager Pat Murphy and their staffs.
The sweep flips the script on last year’s NLCS, when the Dodgers swept Milwaukee on their way to a second consecutive championship. Los Angeles won 100 games this season, but Roberts said the loss only deepened his appreciation for what the group had accomplished.
“There is an appreciation for every time we step on the field, people really bring their Sunday best to beat us,” Roberts said. “Those guys in the other clubhouse, they’re not afraid, they’re hungry, they’re tough, they were starving, actually.”
Roberts also let Miguel Rojas, who is expected to retire after the season, address the team.
The Brewers are headed to the World Series for the first time since 1982 and will face the winner of the American League Championship Series between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays.
“There’s no finger-pointing,” Roberts said. “We win as a team, we lose as a team, and we lost as a team. We got beat as a team.”
