Dodgers get key reinforcement before Rockies series finale

· · 1 min read

The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen situation has looked shaky since the second half began. Not only has their major offseason acquisition in right-hander Edwin Diaz been a disaster thus far, but even their typically reliable other options have struggled.

Right-hander Evan Phillips owns a 5.27 ERA across 17 appearances. Left-hander Alex Vesia has also not been as reliable in the second half, posting a 4.63 ERA over 14 appearances. The only reliable option has been left-hander Tanner Scott, who will now be moved into the closer’s role following Edwin Diaz’s neck injury.

Fortunately, the Dodgers got back a major reinforcement ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

“The Dodgers have activated RHP Brock Stewart from the injured list and designated RHP Jonathan Hernández for assignment,” the team wrote on X.

The Dodgers acquired Stewart at last year’s trade deadline in a deal with the Minnesota Twins, understanding the risk that comes with a player who has dealt with injuries throughout his entire career.

It has not been any different since joining Los Angeles, as this year he has dealt with both a bone spur in his left foot and right shoulder discomfort.

However, when available Stewart has been exactly as advertised. Across 14 appearances this season, he has posted a 2.45 ERA with 14 strikeouts and an impressive 0.750 WHIP, also picking up a save along the way.

He missed just three weeks with his most recent injury and did not require a rehab assignment, meaning he should slot right back in as a high-leverage arm immediately. The Dodgers are hoping he picks up right where he left off as they try to figure out their bullpen situation before October.
